Bret Hickenlooper founded SUMO in 2002. He worked in the telecom industry in the ‘90s for companies such as MCI, Electric Lightwave and Qwest. After seeing other employees in the agent channel, he became fascinated — then obsessed — with the concept of residual commissions. After leaving Qwest, he started SUMO and never looked back. Bret sold everything he owned and made tremendous sacrifices and personal investment to start the company. Eighteen years later, SUMO made the Inc. 5000 and did it two years in a row. The company was #999 in 2019! Today SUMO is an award-winning, well-known agency. Based in Salt Lake City, the company specializes in contact center and data center/colocation and now has one of the largest bases of UCaaS and network in the industry. Hickenlooper is still the president and substantial shareholder, and has added world-class talent to his board, a new CEO and team. He also just acquired another large agency and is actively looking to acquire more.
